Serbian activist risks jail after throwing eggs at Mladic mural

A Serbian activist says she is facing two months in prison after she refused to pay a fine for throwing eggs at a mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.

"I received a message from my lawyer saying that the court ordered me to report within eight days to serve my sentence," activist Aida Corovic told AFP.

She added that she had never hidden her intention of not paying the fine as she believed she did not break any law.

Mladic, a former military leader, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a UN war crimes court for atrocities committed during the Bosnian conflict.

In early October, Corovic was fined more than $900 for throwing eggs at a mural of Mladic in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Corovic is now looking to request a postponement of her sentence but said she still has no intention of paying the fine.

According to a count by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Serbia, there were more than 250 portraits or graffiti featuring Mladic in Belgrade in March 2023.

Bosnia's 1992-1995 war claimed 100,000 lives.
