RWANDAN GENOCIDE SUSPECT ARRESTED IN KENYA

Arusha, October, 22, 2001 (FH) - Former Rwandan prefect François Karera was on Saturday arrested in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, on charges related to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Official sources confirmed he was arrested on a warrant from the UN's International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and is now in Tribunal custody.

"Karera was arrested on Saturday and transferred to the (ICTR) detention facility on the same day," ICTR spokesperson Kingsley Moghalu told Hirondelle. Karera was prefect (governor) of Kigali-Rural province in central Rwanda at the time of the April-July 1994 genocide that left some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus dead. He is charged with genocide or, in the alternative, complicity in genocide; extermination or, in the alternative, murder, as crimes against humanity. GG/JC/PHD/FH(AR1022e)
