Seventeen candidates have already applied. The General Assembly of States Parties will elect six of them when it convenes in New York from December 12 to 21, 2011.
The deadline was initially set for September 2. However, "not all minimum requirements for the nomination of judges have been met", the Secretary General explained.
States are supposed to take into account "the need for the representation of the principal legal systems of the world, equitable geographical representation and a fair proportion of female and male judges".
A candidate from South America and the Caribbean is still missing to fulfill these requirements.
