The request was rejected on January 6, but Bemba filed an appeal three days later.

A similar requests had already been rejected on December 19.

According to the judges, the gravity of the charges against the accused, the possibility of a substantial sentence if convicted and Bemba's access to financial and material support could incite him to abscond.

Bemba is charged with crimes against humanity for his command responsibility in crimes committed by his militia in Central African Republic between 2002 and 2003. His trial opened in November 2010.
