30.01.13 - FRANCE /RWANDA – FRENCH COURT GRANTS RWANDAN EXTRADITION REQUEST

Arusha, January 30, 2013 (FH) – A French court on Wednesday ruled in favour of a Rwandan extradition request for genocide suspect Innocent Musabyimana, reports Agence France-Presse. The suspect has a right of appeal.

Musabyimana , 40, was arrested on January 11 in the Dijon area. He is wanted by Rwanda for genocide and crimes against humanity, for crimes committed in 1994.

It will be up to the French government to sign the extradition order or not. However, Musabyimana has the right to appeal, which would suspend the order.

France, which is investigating some 20 suspects in connection with the Rwandan genocide, has not yet extradited any of them to Rwanda, nor started trying any of them in France.

Up to now, the small number of court decisions granting Rwandan extradition requests have been overturned on appeal by France’s highest court, the Cour de Cassation.
