Stephanie van den Berg is one of JusticeInfo’s correspondents in The Hague. She is a freelance journalist covering the various international courts and Dutch news for Reuters news agency and others. Stephanie has been writing about war crimes trials and international justice for almost twenty years. Together with JusticeInfo colleague Janet Anderson, she is also the host of Asymmetrical Haircuts: a podcast offering a sideways look at international justice, interviewing mainly female experts in their fields.
Kosovo Chambers: battle for legitimacy at the opening of first trial
The first trial of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers opened on September 15 against a Kosovo Liberation Army prison officer, Salih Mustafa, with a lengthy plea from US prosecutor Jack Smith – to defend its legitimacy to target “freedom fighters” who, in the eyes of many Kosovars, fought a “just war” against the Serb troops in 1998-1999.
