Gatete was one of the first people to be indicted by the tribunal after its creation in 1994. Moghalu said that Gatete would make his initial appearance before the court "in the near future". He is currently held at the United Nations Detention Facility in Arusha, Tanzania. Gatete was allegedly a principal participant in the killings of ethnic Tutsis in the East Rwanda province of Kibungo during the 1994 genocide.
