This Chamber is also hearing alternately, the trials of former mayor of Mukingo (Ruhengeri province, north west Rwanda) Juvénal Kajelijeli, and that of six persons accused of crimes in Butare (south of Rwanda). The so-called Butare trial will resume on March 4, 2002 and is scheduled to proceed for a month. The Kajelijeli trial is set to resume on April 8th to May 2th, 2002. The Kamuhanda trial adjourned after the testimony of 24 prosecution witnesses. Part of the proceedings was heard in closed session. When the case resumes in May, the last four prosecution witnesses are scheduled to testify. Kamuhanda is charged with nine counts including genocide, complicity in genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including rape and murder. These crimes were allegedly committed in his native Gikomero commune (Kigali province, central Rwanda). He has denied all charges. BN/SW/JA/FH (KH-0220f)
