CLOSING ARGUMENTS TO BEGIN ON AUGUST 19

Arusha, May 15, 2003, (FH) - The trial of former Rwandan Minister for Higher Education and genocide suspect Jean de Dieu Kamuhanda was on Thursday adjourned to August 19th. The prosecution and the defence are scheduled to present their closing arguments when the case resumes, from August 19th to 21st.

The defence closed its case on Thursday, May 8th after presenting a total of 36 witnesses. On Monday 12th, the prosecution presented a motion for rebuttal but the trial chamber dismissed it. Kamuhanda trial started on September 3rd, 2001. The prosecution called a total of 28 witnesses. Kamuhanda is charged with eight counts including genocide, complicity in genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including rape and murder. These crimes were allegedly committed in his native Gikomero commune (Kigali province, central Rwanda). The trial is before Trial Chamber II composed of Judges William Hussein Sekule of Tanzania (presiding), Arlette Ramaroson (Madagascar) and Winston Churchill Matanzima Maqutu (Lesotho).
