BUTARE TRIAL TO RESUME ON MONDAY

Arusha, February 21,2003 (FH) - The trial of six individuals charged with genocide crimes in Butare Province (South Rwanda) resumes before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda on Monday. The trial was adjourned on November 13th last year after the testimony of the eighteenth prosecution witness to enable the chamber hear the Kajelijeli trial.

The Butare trial, which involves the largest number of suspects in the ICTR, will proceed for five weeks up to March 27th. This trial groups former Minister for Family and Women's Affairs Pauline Nyiramasuhuko and her son Arsène Shalom Ntahobali, former Butare prefects Sylvain Nsabimana and Alphonse Nteziryayo and former mayors of Ngoma Joseph Kanyabashi and Muganza, Elie Ndayambaje. Pauline Nyiramasuhuko is the first woman to be indicted before an international court for rape and genocide.
