22.03.12 - ICTR PROSECUTOR HANDS OVER KAYISHEMA’S FILE TO RWANDA

Arusha, March 22, 2012 (FH) – Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) Hassan Bubacar Jallow Thursday handed over the case file of genocide-fugitive and former Judicial Police Inspector, Fulgence Kayishema to the Rwandan Prosecutor General, Martin Ngoga in Arusha,Tanzania.

This is the second time Jallow handed over genocide-accused file to the Rwandan government. On January 16, 2012 he did the same for the file of Pastor Jean Uwinkindi by handing it to Ngoga in Rwanda. Uwinkindi is still on the hands of the Tribunal waiting for finalization process of his transfer to Rwanda for trial. Handing over two CDs and hard copy files, Jallow said the Tribunal would continue cooperating with Rwanda in the tracking down and the ultimate arrest of the fugitive. In his brief remarks at the ceremony, Rwandan Prosecutor General assured the UN court authorities that once arrested and brought before a court, the accused would receive a fair trial. On February 22, 2012, a Referral Chamber at ICTR granted the prosecutor’s referral application for the transfer of the fugitive case to Rwanda for trial. NI/FK/GF
